The Zuzu AI Companion

For when no one is around

I built Zuzu for people talking to people. A stranger who chose to listen, on the other side of the world, at 2am. That is still the heart of it, and it always will be.

But sometimes nobody is available to chat with. Sometimes you do not want to wait. And sometimes you would simply rather talk to an AI. So when a person is not there, the Zuzu AI Companion is.

A person first. Always.

  1. You tap Vent or Listen: No account, no name. Just a soft, random one for this chat.
  2. Zuzu looks for a real person: Someone on the other side who chose the opposite role, or the same one if that is all there is.
  3. Someone is free: You talk 1:1 with a real person. This is what Zuzu is for. Nobody yet: After about 10 seconds, a quiet option appears. "Chat with Zuzu AI Companion"
  4. The AI Companion joins: Clearly labelled as AI, right at the top. Choosing it ends the search, so to find a person later, you just start a new chat.

When you choose Vent

Example: A breakup

Example: A failed exam

Example: A lost job

When you choose Listen

Example: the AI playing someone who needs to vent

Not a general-purpose chatbot

Example: an off-topic request

What it is not

Not Therapy, not An AI therapist, not Medical care, not A crisis service.

If you searched for an AI mental health chatbot or an AI therapist, here is the honest part: this is not one. It is a kind, simple listener. It cannot diagnose, treat or keep you safe in an emergency, and like any AI, it can get things wrong.

If a message sounds like someone may be in danger, a gentle card with free helplines appears, in AI chats just like in chats with people. If you are in danger right now, please contact local emergency services or find a helpline near you. Find a free helpline

Questions people ask

Is the Zuzu AI Companion a therapist?

No. It is not therapy, not an AI therapist, not medical care and not a crisis service. It is a simple, kind listener for when no person is free, and it can get things wrong.

Can I choose the AI instead of waiting for a person?

Yes. After about 10 seconds of searching, a "Chat with Zuzu AI Companion" option appears. Choosing it ends the search for a person, and you can start a new chat anytime to look again.

Will it pretend to be a real person?

Never. It is labelled "Zuzu AI Companion" at the top of the chat, and if you ask, it says it is an AI. When it plays someone for you to listen to, the chat opens with a note that the story is made up.

Does Zuzu save my AI chats?

No. To write replies, your recent messages in that chat (up to the last 15) are sent to OpenAI. Zuzu does not save the chat, and when you leave, it is gone.

What if I am in crisis?

Please contact local emergency services or a crisis helpline right away. If a message sounds like someone may be in danger, Zuzu shows a card with free helplines, but the AI Companion cannot keep you safe in an emergency.
